you indicated that the windshield cracked as you "reached out to take the bridge off". The problem might occured when you leaned onto the glass. (if you did.) It happened to me once. While I was working, the motor dealer leaned onto the right hand side off the screen, I was working on the left side. at that moment I wasn't touching the work area. As he touched the glass it cracked on my side, not long, about 2 inches. He saw it and asked what happened. so I told him it's because of the uneven pressure on the glass. he accepted it later and I repaired the damage.
might be the problem there also.
