Sounds like you have maybe a partial bullseye chip with some air in it. The air inside is what makes it look like a burn. I'm guessing it looks black to you.
You never know with chips if they will actually spread or not. I've had some that spidered on impact, but never seemed to grow and I've seen tiny little chips spread like crazy. I'd say the more extreme your weather, the more chance it has to get worse.
Repairing it now is kind of like getting an insurance policy. You might be wasting your money, but you might also be saving yourself a $200+ replacement. I'd probably have it repaired, but back in the day when I was short on money, I might gamble.
