It's likely that laminated glass is used on the side to provide extra support for side airbags when they deploy. If so, repairs would restore the strength to the side glass the same as front windshields.

I'm not sure I would want laminated glass on my driver side window if I didn't have a way to manually roll down the window in case I end up in a lake!
