D***IT! Crack Out S.O.B.

So I get to one of my jobs today and it has a very small chip (under 1/4"). I think, "this will be a quick and easy one" WRONG!! I attach my mirror and notice it was a lil bigger then I initial thought but appeared to be very stable and still quite strong. I dry it out and attach my bridge like normal, go into my first pressure cycle and boom it cracks out 2" in both directions...great. I attempt to repair it still but was unable to get what I consider a quality repair out of it. This is the only issue I've had all year...I guess you cant win them all. Rant over.

So how did it end up with the customer? What did you end up doing, just not charging?

I know how you feel. When the easiest ones turn ugly, it can get rather depressing real quick. With the weather getting colder, I guess it is to be expected. Do you think you dried it out too long? At least it is behind you.

If and when one runs I can always look back and find I did something wrong, what are the reasons you think your repair run.

I think what happened was I either over heated it with the moisture evaporator and/or didnt let the glass cool enough before I started my first pressure cycle. The customer was not happy and neither was I, so no charge to the customer and a killer deal on a replacement if they want it.

Those small 1/4" cracks can be the most troublesome. They can be liked coiled springs waiting to crack out at the slightest amount of pressure. I had one yesterday, which I wasn't certain about, so I opened it up with my impact tool to relieve the stress before starting the repair process.

Perhaps it was temp shocked when the cold resin hit the hot glass.
Do you have a thermometer?
