Most de icers are 90-95% water, 5-7% methanol, and the rest is assorted silicones and misc. Address accordingly.

Do they create the risk of a chip running when used?

Sorry for the lag. Don't know of any reason de icer would present any extra issue. Suspect you are maybe thinking about Rain-X or some such product that actually adheres to the glass and causes headaches. It probably wouldn't hurt to run a little 0000 steel wool over the area first, then dry it out like normal. Have never known or heard of anyone having issues because of this type of product. Again, its mostly water with a little methanol to melt the ice, no big deal.
