Can a small chip on the windshield be repaired ?

Post by MSB1991 »

Hi all.

I've had my current car ( 57 plate vauxhall vectra 1.9 CDTI) for about a month now. I noticed a few days after buying that the windshield has a small chip moreover to the passenger side and below the interior middle mirror area. it is really irritating me because I am not sure if somebody has done this to my car during my ownership or if it was already there but if so I am sure I'd have noticed , regardless it wants repairing anyway. I have put a small clear sticker over the chip to prevent water/dirt getting in and making it worse.

I remember on a previous car trying to fix a chip and it cracked the windshield so I will let the pro's handle this.

please answer the following.

1. If I take it to a specialist and they end up cracking the windshield where would I stand, would they replace it at no extra cost and if not would they refund the fee for chip repair ?

2. how successful are these repairs and is the chip still noticeable after repair ??

3. what is the average price for a small windshield chip repair ?

4. how long does this job generally take to complete ?

I'd have had it done by now but I want to make sure the job is done right and so am on the look out for a person who know's exactly how to do a good job on repairing this.

thanks

1. take it too a specialist, not easy to find in the UK but if you do they are unlikely to make it crack, a replacemnet company might though. It is already broken therefore you cannot break it again, so if it did go whilst being repaired I would say that you did not take it too a trained proffesional, also that they are extremely unlikely to pay for you to replace your broken windscreen and they should ceratinly not charge you for the repair, although most will.

2. Quality repairs are very succesful, I have been doing them for nearly 30 years, poor quality one's like most carried out in the UK are not succesful though.

3. £50

4. 40 minutes.

Where are you and could you post a photo, of the damage not you of course.

Why would you expect someone to replace your damaged windshield with a new one simply because they where trying to repair the damage done? I don't understand this mentality at all. If your car is in a wreck and the bodyshop has an issue with the paint, are they going to buy you a new car?? Really makes no sense.
