Re: Delta Crack Expanders?

Hello My name is Jeff.
I have been the sales and operations manager for PPG Auto Glass for Charleston,SC and Savannah, GA for the past 8 years. The last 3 years my primary focus has been education my customers (mainly auto glass replacement companies) of the growing need to really push auto glass repair. I have set hundreds of accounts up with Lynx and several dozen more with PPG Prostars. I will say that I am currently employed with PPG Ind. until the end of this month. I am then starting my own windshield repair only business up as of the 1st of April.

If I was not 100% positive of the WSR business earning me a great deal of money....I would not be doing this.
I have a $1800.00 per month mortgage........$700.00 in car payments........ and I just bought a new boat yesterday.
I also have a wife and two sons.......5 and 8 years old.
For me to walk away from a outstanding track record, company car, benefits, bonuses, and a great salary from an industry leader....to do windshield repairs......I am either very stupid or very confident in my future.
Because of my heavy involvement with Prostars and Lynx services I can offer a great deal of knowledge to the readers.

The insurance industry is in a full blown panic to lower there cost per claim......we all know that 80% of windshields could have been repaired rather than replaced..........It is our jobs to educate the insurance agents that you offer WSR....It is not hitting them in their pocket books yet.....but mark my words....by the end of 2003 the agents are going to start getting hit because of there cost per claim.....you need to be positioned and established with them to reap the rewards.

Now..........I am not building my business on the agent referrals only....that is just a small portion.

I will give you one small example.

Since I am still an employee of PPG I am working full time and have no time to really work my repair business until the end of this month.

I took 3 hours last Thursday and made sales calls to new and used car dealerships.........In that 3 hours I sold 14 repairs at $35.00 each..........I set them up for Saturday repairs......went out through and ended doing the original 14 repairs and picked up an additional 4 repairs for a total of 18.
$630.00 for 3 hours of sales calls is not bad money.

I did not make anymore sales calls this week until yesterday.....I was on my way to meet a customer and 1/2 hour to kill.........Popped in a couple dealers.....made a fast walk thru the lot and picked up 6 more repairs that I am going to take care of after lunch today.

My point of all this is.........................My area is over run with replacement and repair companies.........literally a glass shop on every corner.........But if you want success and you want to earn a great living........................................You only have to do one thing.

GO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck all
Jeff

Auto Glass Repair,

Jeff, way to go. Taking initiative can produce and surpass your goals and I am sure you will have continued success with your positive outlook.

The handful of agencies I have visited are interested and very receptive to windshield repair. Some were and some were not aware of the large potential for reducing the cost per auto glass claim with WSR. Unfortunately, I wish the insurance agents in my state (PA) were more open to sending referrals out but I keep getting hit with " We are in a position that prevents us from doing so do to the Anti-Steering Laws in our state". My question to them is...

With respect to your position, we all now that steering is an industry problem and a large, if not all, of the majority of it comes from the glass networks these insurance companies use to process their claims. If your company will not allow this to happen why would you use a glass network that is involved in such activities?

My answers vary from...I don't know, I did not know that was happening, we don't have those answers at our level, to it is out of our hands, we use these networks to avoid these claims and let the glass networks handle them per their guidelines(more or less out of site, out of mind).

Jeff, once again congrats on your success and I wish you much more in the future.

The best approach you can take is not to try and get the agent to send you business................Instead just educate them...........Let them know that you are out there.
Get signed up on every network you can...........When the agents feel the cost per claim crunch (and beleive me they will) ...... you may see a few referals.

Another benefit of signing up with the networks is........just being able to do the work.

If you come across a customer that has full coverage and you are not signed up with LYNX for example.........You cant do work for State Farm.

It cost nothing to sign up and it is just good business to take advantage of every method possible to bring in or bill out business.

Auto Glass Repair,

Jeff, we all have to decide what paths we will take to establish our businesses. One of those bumpy paths is the Glass Network path. Which is all fine and good if you are willing to let them dictate how certain areas of your business are run. I am not willing to let some one else decide what is best financially for my company as they set the prices.

If I may suggest, get your self on there approved vendor list but do not agree to there contract. They won't send you any referrals and more than likely they would not have anyway. It also allows you the flexibility to set your own prices.

I personally direct bill all my claims and have had great success doing it that way with all companies that provide insurance in my area. I might also add I have never been short paid. There are a bunch of good posts in here relating to this method if you wish to try it.

Jeff, If your system is working for you and you don't mind the way the networks insist you do things then by all means stick to it and I wish you continued success.

Jeff, where are you located?
