FG 329 (Small Drill Bit)

Post by impala-renegade »

Just got my first ones ever, WOW they are small!! I didn't realize how tiny.. I've already broken 2 in no time at all. How do you guys go about using them? With the FG 701's I hold the drill at an extreme angle and etch into the glass slowly, and then slowly raise the drill to a 90 degree/direct angle to the glass.. Prevents skip out. FG 329 I guess you can make a small etch with it, but don't raise up the drill during drilling.

Dang they break easy! I've had them break as soon as reaching the plastic layer in the glass. IDK about these ones!

Tell me please that you do not drill down to the PVB on customers cars. I find the FG2 works best for me and my customers.

As screenman noted, why would you drill that deep into the glass? Drlling into the laminate layer is a big mistake. Drilling in general, unless to assist in popping a bulsseye, is rarely even necessary. Sometimes I use the drill to clean out a pit slightly but thats about it.

I like using the FG329.
When drilling, you need to move the drill in a slight circular motion, so that the drill hole is slightly bigger than the drill.
Otherwise, you will snap the drill easily.
When popping a bullseye, use a sewing needle which fits easily inside the drill hole, otherwise you will shatter the sides of the drill hole.

If you want a hole bigger than the drill why not use a bigger drill?

what if any is the advantage to using a smaller than normal diameter bit? If you have to egg out the hole to make it larger in order to avoid problems, why use it at all? if it breaks easier than a standard bit, why use it? Am I missing something?

If the hole is not slightly bigger than the drill, it could snap easily if you deviate from holding the drill perfectly straight in the hole.
I personally like a small drill hole. If someone else likes to use a bigger drill bit , and thinks a bigger drill hole is better, you are certainly entitled to your opinion and I have no problem with that.

Well I use a burr tip bit and the probe I use fits the hole perfectly. I dont have to egg out the hole. When drilling on glass that doesnt have an impact hole, I do place it against the glass at an angle to give myself a starting point to eliminate skipping and then reume normal drilling. I wasnt saying a bigger hole is better, I was saying why drill smaller if it requires egging out to make your probe fit? Why not use a bit that matches up with the type probe you use?

My probe fits .
I wiggle the drill slightly while I am drilling.
I learned that trick, when I took DK training in Eugene.
The first time I tried drilling glass, I broke the drill.
The DK trainer told me I could prevent that by wiggling the drill slightly. ( I believe his name was Matt)
After that I wiggled the drill and I don't break any more drills.
I have drilled thousands of holes and I am happy with the results.
The hole is still smaller than a FG701 hole.
I have some FG701 burrs in my toolkit, but I choose not to use them>
I like the FG329.
Some people like Chevys. Some people like Fords.
It matters not if the cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice.
