Help with headlight and rubber molding

Hi everyone
I had a Ford Mustang with the wrap around headlights with thin rubber molding that took me forever to restore because the coating was so hard even with starting 120 grit.
Anyway the problem was trying to sand off the old coating flush with the rubber molding that I taped to protect it.
Maybe I am too much of a perfectionist but no matter how carefully I sanded I still ended up with a faint line of old coating next to the rubber molding that was visible after applying the new UV coat.
Luckily I did this job for free
but for future reference is there a way to deal with this other then extreme patience!?
