Training in Oregon.. worth it?

(Hi, just asking a question under my boyfriend's sn)

We are a couple trying out the frontier of windshield repair. Jason has a few months of experience that came from working with another company, but they used the do-it-yourself kits (little plastic four legged "bridges") and Liquid Resins International, resin. I have no experience except the one practice chip I just did with our Delta Kits kit that we got yesterday.

In order for us to get to Oregon for the training it would be about $800 total for the trip. Our only income at the present moment is that I do daycare and put in some hours at my parents' bowling center. Jason has repaired a few chips here and there for a little money.

The question here is: Is it worth the $800 to come out there (as it would have to come out of our "emergency fund" money) for the training. Or is this something we can get good at by watching the video and practicing, practicing, practicing?

That's a tough one. The question is ...... Is this an emergency?

If you are just starting out, you only get one opportunity to make a first impression. You could probably make the $800 back pretty quickly. But what if .... your transmission goes out (or something else) and you need the $800. Now you are really in trouble. I think the training is deffinatley worth 800. Maybe you could ask Jeff and the guys are Delta if they think they can train you through video, calling them and using this forum. Nothing is better than "hands on training" but those three are pretty darn close.
Or ... is there someone a couple of hours away who would train you.
Tell us where you are and maybe someone who is not your competitor would train you for a weekend. That way you only spend one night in a hotel.
So you'd only be out $50 for gas and $60 for a hotel.

I'm in TN. A bit closer than Oregon but not much. Maybe someone will volunteer. Surely someone in Chicago or within a 3 hour drive.

I am in Lasalle, MI but not familar with delta equipment. I assume the basic techinques would be the same for most equipment. I think grandrapids is a couple hours north of me.

Any specialized repair training will shorten your learning curve getting into this biz. Could you make it on your own without training and just a video tape? Yeah, you could! I suppose the important question to ask yourself is how long will that take? One year or possibly longer?

$800 to increase technical and business skills is a drop in the bucket going into this business or for that matter any other businesses. If you can't afford that right now best to save up for next scheduled session.
