Drilling repairs

I liked it better when everyone drilled. Ah, the good old days. Can't recommend drilling with a good concience these days though. I just did a double star break on my wife's windshield a few minutes ago. I was a little nervous because one break had no visible impact point and the other one had just the tiniest of surface chips, maybe about 1/32" or less in diameter. They were close together but not touching that I could see, so I figured I would have to drill at least one of them, but I gave it a shot without drilling and although it took about 20 minutes, both stars filled perfectly. I was really bummed out that no one was around to admire my handy work.

Ok, so dumb question....If a lot of people here are not drilling things like a below the surface batwings breaks or tight starbreaks that don't seem to have much if any opening, then are those examples to start out popping a bullseye or what do you do then to open things up? What little training I had years ago was to drill most starbreaks unless they showed flex when you first probed the impact point. I've weaned off that some, but still wondering what others are doing.

This post got me thinking about the way I was doing my repairs.Because I do w/sale accounts Dealers fleets etc.I tend to want to go fast and was getting in the bad habit of drilling everything!!! Because I shifted to doing paint repair also I have alot of time at each stop because in alot of cases work most of the day at one or two stops.What I do now is consider W/shield repair as an add on service.I will round up all of the cars w/damage and will start multiple injectors on 3-5 repairs at once.I cover them well with dark towells and start on a Paint repair at the same time.After reading the forum I stopped drilling 99% of my repairs.By just letting these injectors do their job and not being in a hurry I tend to cycle pressure/vacume longer durations and have very complete great looking repairs w/out the pit fill scars from drilling.I have seen the light about drilling.Just use drill now /probe to clean out impact point and set up injector and forget.The longer its on the repair the less problems I have with fill and a quality repair.I know most do not have the luxury to let an injector stay on a w/shield for 30 min or so but it sure makes a difference on problem repairs.I will check them after 5-10 to see if the easy ones are already filling/vacume /cycle/ tab and cure and move the injector down the line.Ones that are being trouble I will just let work and its taken care of most of my problems w.tight legs and combos etc.

Harrellbenjami...I thought the thread was about drilling...not about making the buck...your post insulted me as a REPAIR TECH. b/c you deminished the importance of repair...I use a repair tool I know does a great job...I work my '"tail" off to provide excellent repair and service...your post seemed not in line with the post...drilling is a part of repair...either you do it or you don't...

LOL.................I thought I answered the question in debth.Sorry that I ruffeled your feathers.,but dont seem to see where I could have "insulted you as a tech?" Guess what ?? Fixing W/Shiields is all about making money as is everything else you do on your route.And diminishing the importance of a repair???????? Well maybe some of us can multitask better than others.This aint rocket science grasshopper. I now dont drill automaticly on most repairs as I have time while making $$$$$$$ to wait patiently while preforming other types of service at my stops.Yes,on some types I may still drill but not automaticly as before.Clear it up for ya???

Yea ,better be carefull.I'm sure there is a rule number or policy or something that I could be "wrote up" for.The world of PC'!!!!!!! Ya gotta love it...............................................
