SGT, I to am a licensed A&P since 1981. Worked heavy commercial a/c 95% of my career. Have used micro mesh on acryllic windows such as fuselage side windows and cockpit eyebrows, etc. The front w/s's on large a/c are laminated glass, I believe. I've come across a few shattered w/s's in my time (only outer layer). I think the FAA is worried about some distortion in cockpit w/s's. I've been doing scratch removal for builders and car w/s's for a couple pf years now distortion free but my supplier doesn't want to deal with the FAA to get their excellent scratch removal system onboard with the FAA. Probably a $$$$$$ thing!

On the all Boeing equipment my company flys the L1 & R1 windows are multi paned. Our policy is very strict with flt deck windows. We never, at least not at my maintenance hub polish windshields L1 & R1's. An overhaul facility might though but I doubt it. All other flt deck windows are situational based. If a flt crew writes us scratches and say there vision is impaired that is pretty much put the aircraft out of service. Fuselage windows are fair game depending on the severity.

Usually when the L1 or R1 shatter, weather outter, middle or inner pane it is from faulty window heat system. Sometimes improper torques or a messy bird strike.
