Nitrile gloves and eye protection?

How many of you take these precautions to protect your skin and eyes?

I just started having a problem with my hands breaking out and blistering. I was using the gloves I got from Delta kits. My doc said I was allergic to latex so I switch over to another non latex glove and I'm still having problems with my hands blistering and itching like crazy. Any suggestions??

Just to clarify, Delta Kits has never sold latex gloves. Latex does not protect you from acid based chemicals, and can actually be worse than not wearing gloves at all as the chemicals can go through the gloves and can be trapped against the skin. Delta Kits only sells Nitrile gloves. Proper use of gloves is also very important. Only use them for one application. Pull them off starting at the wrist and peeling them off without touching the contaminated surface and dispose of immediately. If you get a hole in your glove, remove it immediately and wash your hands with hot water and soap, then put on fresh gloves.

We run into very few people that have problems with MagniBond windshield repair resin. Do you use a Delta Kits resin? Is it MagniBond? If so, have you used other resins in the past? We find that almost everyone who has a reaction to MagniBond has used another product previously and has developed a sesitivity to all acid based resin products. Using Nitrile gloves helps, but in rare cases does not completely remedy the problem.

Have you tried a barrier cream or foam? There are a number of them on the market to choose from. I like a product called DermaShield, but unfortunately the shipping regulations make it too expensive for us to ship anymore. You can order DermaShield directly from Benchmark Commercial, or you can ask your local safety supply store what they recommend. They are a bit more expensive, but there are also more durable Nitrile gloves than the ones Delta Kits sells. In your case I would recommend wearing a barrier cream and the highest quality Nitrile gloves you can find.

You may also consider trying an acid free windshield repair resin. AF resins do not offer the same bonding strength that acid based resins offer, but they are safer for someone with a skin condition, and many technicians are very satisfied with the performance. I would be happy to send you a free sample of Delta Kits acid free windshield repair resin as will many of the other windshield repair suppliers I'm sure.

I have never had an allergic reaction to Delta Kits windshield repair resins, but I have had problems with oven cleaners and other household cleansers, so I know how miserable it can be. I hope you will be able to find a workable solution to the problem soon.

I would wear eye protection when making chips in practice windshields to practice on because of the chance a piece of glass would fly up while making the chip. Otherwise I don't wear eye protection, but do where the Nitrile gloves as often as I can while repairing.

I had a salesman get resin in his eye once. No permanent damage, but he was pretty uncomfortable for a couple of hours. Better safe than sorry.

The first 3 years in repair I didn't use gloves or safti glasses and never had any problems. I truthfully thought it was no big issue.

It wasn't until I experienced my first blow out failure going into my 4th year (using a high acid based resin) that I decided to start wearing safti glasses. At the time, I didn't even carry a eye wash kit and was lucky to be working at a dealership where they had one. (FOR YOUR SAFETY, PLEASE ALWAYS HAVE A EYE WASH KIT AVAILABLE) If you ever had resin blow into your face and eyes I'm sure you would agree.

As far as using gloves went.... I continued to work without them after this incident happened. Well, that was my next biggist mistake because after only two weeks of getting resin into my eyes and face, I started having reactions to resins through any skin contact. So, I then went to using Nitrile gloves and thought that would fix things. Unfortunately, that didn't help and things only got worse. With all the open bleeding cracks on my hands I then developed a chemical reaction to the nitrile rubber chemicals seeping into my body. Same with latex gloves.

The only thing that works for me today is vinyl examination gloves. Been using these for years now with no problems. Believe it or not they are also half the cost of nitrile. I normally will change them every 2-3 repairs on a fleet accounts because they will break down. You can buy them from a local Pharmacy or online. They also just introduced elastic fitting ones, which I haven't tried so far.

I would highly suggest to everybody, don't wait for the same problems I've experienced to happen to you.....you can prevent that from occuring. Start using protective gloves and wearing safti glasses.

Thanks for the info, the gloves I was using were the nitrile that I purchased from Delta Kits. I've been using the the Magnabond ever since I came to the class last April and I really like the product. Before that I was using a different resin and I wasn't wearing gloves until about 5 months ago when I thought it might be the smart thing to do. My first time my hands broke out was back in November right before Thanksgiving. The next time was the Saturday before Christmas and now just two days ago. This last time they didn't break out quite as bad as the first two time but they are tender.
I'm not saying it's the product I'm saying that after all this time of working on windshields my system is a lot more senstive than before.
Thanks for the infomrmation on the preventative products that you mentioned, I will definately be trying them.

That's what I was afraid of. Once you have developed a sesitivity to a chemical even the slightest exposure can trigger a reaction.
