Jeff,
If after all measures were taken to connect the leg and did not work, I would drill into the pit and shoot an anchor to open it up to connect the leg if possible. Now if the disconnected portion was a few inches long I would also recommend anchoring the end of the crack as well.

I have come to the conclusion that the unconnected leg must have been subsurface and that is why I was unable to make it connect. I have done other repairs since then, so it is no longer at the forefront of my memory. Thanks to all of you for your input!
