Filled chip in windshield - outer edges not filled

Post by danjrowe27 »

Basically I filled a chip I had in my windshield with a rain-x kit. It looked fine at first but then walked out this morning to check it and the outer edges of the ship aren't filled. I let the resin cure overnight as it was dark and I didn't have a UV light. Did this cause a crappy repair? What can I do to make this look better? Thanks! Btw sorry for poo images, it's raining out right now.

I didn't see any photos and I don't know anything about that resin but most resins are anaerobic, meaning they do not cure in the presence of air, and also require UV to cure properly. Did you cover the damage to remove all air from the adhesive and allow it to cure in the sunlight the next morning?

Looks like you left some moisture in the damage. Did you dry the break before repairing?

Yes, the day I did it it was completely dry outside. Florida tends to get muggy at night so maybe moisture got in? Not sure. Is it possible to drill and refill? Should I take it to a pro?

OK I'm guessing by what you said that you did not do a dry out procedure to the damage, so yes I think there was moisture in the damage. If this was your first try at a repair you actually did better than most. You probably can't improve that one, just be happy you got it that good.

Would a professional be able to drill it and fill it properly?

Yes you can drill more and fix it. But there will be more surface blemishing and you may want to no charge to save face. Sometimes it is best to eat a mistake than make a bigger one. But you still can save the windshield.

Thanks for the info! You're saying go through insurance for the fix?

I always looked at a bad or failed repair as a non repair and the next step would be replacement. A fix would be a messy repair and I wouldn't have the heart to charge anybody. Even the insurance people need to know who they can trust for a good job.
