If I am to repair without drilling the chip, won't I need a certain kind of probe that can etch into the glass correctly? I bought a carbide probe for this job, but now upon receiving it it looks like normal metal at the tip.. Do you know what the name of the probe is that I was thinking of? Thank you guys! :ugeek:

You don't need a special kind of probe to fill a break without drilling and most technicians prefer "not" to use a carbide probe because it is easy to accidentally scratch the glass. If you really want one I'm sure I can dig one up for you but I don't recommend it.

I was just taught to use the carbide when trying to fill w/o drill, and had never considered only using the steel probe. That's all I have now though and will try it out tomorrow!

I guess what I have actually is a carbide. It looks super smooth though so it tricked me. I see what you were saying about using a regular steel probe, if you slip out it wouldn't mess up the glass.. I lost my steel probe somehow and also my rubber vacuum cup.. Would probably buy either from someone $

My opinion. I just use a carbide awl, lightly scratch a small indentation at the end of a crack to keep the burr from skipping.
