XtraBond

Post by Mr Bill »

Has anybody tried XtraBond?
Its supposed to make the resin adhere to the glass better.
Any opinions on that?

I saw it advertised that way too. It's an additive you manually put in with the resin, right? Got my curiosity up. First impression doubtful, but would also like to hear from anybody who's tried it. Like when would it be needed? Maybe when you have a big chip out at the point of impact and you try to fill with thick pit resin and want to make sure it doesn't fall out? Can't think of a reason to need it for just run of the mill repair work.

Saw an ad for it. Maybe they feel that other mfg's resins do not have the preformance characteristics they should. Surely they would not make this product to be coupled with there own resins as that might suggest that they are inferior resins. Shouldnt there resins already be formulated to incorporate this chemical?

It appears this chemical is compatible with all resins but honestly if you are using a quality resin what is the need?

Necessity is the mother of invention. Just not sure where the necessity is! Do you feel your brand resin needs this?

Also advertised in Ultra Bond website, not sure whose it really is. But tend to agree with Brian; why would you need it if using a good resin? I'm not a chemist though. I know in paint work, a catalyst is sometimes used in different applications. But just seems odd here. Like someone came up with one more product to convince us we need to buy. Maybe Brent or someone more knowledgeable knows the straight scoop

Sorry Blindsquirrel, didn't see your post before I posted mine. But since you said that, it makes more sense. However, GT's description of the product does claim it is for pre-treatment of resin repair, "improves the bonding characteristics of UV resin regardless of the resin manufacturer..."

Ahhh, the old improving the bonding... just so all of you know. When working on a large chip or small. if you use a drop of your thinner resin and your probe to spread it around all the edges etc. Your Pit Filler will bond better to the chip. But since we all have a thinner resin than pit filler why purchase anything else to promote adhesion. if that indeed is what they say its for..

It is my understanding that GT and UB are working together in marketing a couple of products for windshield repair. I don't remember what they are called, but I would think a quick visit to their respective websites would clear up exactly what the products are used for. Other than that I really don't know much about the products.

Wasn't it not to long ago a few of us posted inquiries about the newly offered X-Phobic treatment? I don't recall much feedback on that one!

Another GT invention that either nobody uses or possibly....it works so well,
nobody is willing to share. ;-)

I deduced from the Ultrabond website the previous statements I made.
This is the first I've heard of this "pretreatment" for windshield repair. I'll try to get my mind around it.

Gary,

Don't be to hard on yourself. We forgive you.

On the surface, as in my original post, it raises a few questions at least for me. I have used the sames resin for years with no problems as I am sure many of you have used yours.
