Refused a Crack repair today

Post by MJDShield »

Hi , Im new to the field and am trying to to build my business on good quality work & honesty. Recently to drum up some new business, I sent out flyers to businesses that had fleets of vehicles. I heard back from one of them today who wanted me to look at a windshield on one of their trucks. I went to look at it and saw something I have not run into yet ( newbe). On the driverside there was a crack begining from the top of the windshield underneath the molding to the middle of the glass (driver view) and going across and back up underneath the molding again (a BIG U). I saw no impact damage so that told me stress cracking(right?). Because of the shape ,length( 26 inches in total ) and because the crack was right smack into the middle of the drivers view. I recommended replacement (which I do not do) .

1- was I right?
2- If not ,what would be the best way to repair? Would breaking it down to 3 separate cracks and filling them that way.

Thanks for your responses. Mike

Mike,

Edge rock hits seldom show much sign of impact. Sometimes the pit is so small it takes a pick or scribe to feel it. It could also have been a stress crack if windshield had been replaced before and edge of glass was nicked or chipped prior to install.

You were wise to turn this one down, not something you want to try with a new account. The other problem is the crack was in viewing area of driver which might hold you liable if a future accident occurred. I personally would have passed on this one too.

Good luck getting your business started!

Starquest if correct you did make the right decision. Myself I don't do cracks more than a couple inches but many on here do long ones but not in that area.

I do long cracks I doubt if I would have taken that one on.
