Rookie question: Razor scrapes off finish
Rookie question: Razor scrapes off finish
new to the forum and repair business.
I've been practicing on several old windshields that I have on a stand. After about twenty repairs I am getting the hang of it except for one thing. I cure my repair under the UV light, then asI try to scape off the excess build up and I am always left with a rough pit where the original chip once was. I've tried refilling that pit three or four times and once I run a razor over it it still takes off a small amount of the top layer leaving me with a rough divot.
I am using a Delta kit. I am also on the schedule to attend the Jan. 2009 class, but would like to practice before class starts.
Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you are not back scraping You hold the blade like it was standing on the glass instead of at a angle drag it across the chip while holding firmly use a fresh blade and scrape back

Re: Rookie question: Razor scrapes off finish
No worries it has to be something simple and easily corrected. I will assume your DK supplies are all working normally, resins are good and this is on practice glass with no hyrophobic coating.
1. Are you using pit fill resin
2. Are you using a curing tab over the pit fill resin
3.Are you allowing the curing tab to naturally rest against the resin and glass (if you push down on it you will end up with a divot.)
3. Are you curing for 5 minutes
4. Are you using a new razor each time
5. Are you holding your razor blade at a 90 degree angle when scraping
6. Are you holding the razor firmly on the glass while rapidly scraping back and fourth over the damage
Hope the answer lies somewhere in there. Let us know.

Re: Rookie question: Razor scrapes off finish
Thank you for the quick suggestions.
I am doing all of the above except for holding the razor at a 90 degree angle. I was using move of a 45 degree angle. I'll try that tomorrow and report back.
Also. My kit came with two vials of magnibond. I was wondering if probond or premium is that much better?

Looks like you have it figured out. Glad we could help.
As for the resin, you can not go wrong with either. You be just fine with the magni bond. I used to use premium bond but have switched to magni bond. They are slight differences between the two but you could not tell the difference when it comes to application/injection of the resin.

Re: Rookie question: Razor scrapes off finish
MagniBond is our best resin and the one I use for everything. Premium Bond is also very good, but being phased out as the vast majority of our customers like MagniBond better. ProBond is available in different viscosities and colors, but again, MagniBond is the only resin I use and is by far our best seller.

Re: Rookie question: Razor scrapes off finish
Thanks again for the quick help.
I used a 90 degree angle and it came out perfectly. Also performed my first repair for a client and all went well.
Like said previously, I am attending the school on January 23rd. Do the students receive any kind of discount on the day of class? I will be purchasing more equipment and supplies either way. But if I can get a discount on the day of class I'll come prepared. Thanks.

There are generally some special offers available at Delta kits training classes, but I don't know exactly what they will be for the January class yet. Check in with me in a couple of weeks and I can give you a better idea of what will be available in the January class.
