Crack on inside of windshield
Came across a nasty combination break today that appeared to have cracks on both sides of the glass. At first glance it seemed like a normal combination break but upon further inspection I'm quite sure it was cracked on the inside too. Has anyone come across this, and can it be fixed. I opted not to repair it and told my customer he probably should have his winshield repalced. Did I do the right thing?

Re: Crack on inside of windshield
There was a recent post about a technician doing a repair on the inside of a windshield. If you haven't read the post I encourage you to do so because it is really interesting. Here is the link to it did a chip on the inside part of windshield

If you are choosing to follow the Repair of Laminated Auto Glass Standards (ROLAGS), you should not do this repair.
Personally, and I'm not speaking for anyone but myself here, I would recommend a replacement if there is damage on the inside or inside AND outside layers of the glass. It makes sense to me, because I've seen scrap windshields that are cracked on one side, but not on the other, and they are much more rigid than windshields with a crack on both lites of the glass (both sides of the laminate).
I am not by any means saying that I have proof of a safety issue here, but it makes sense to me that it just isn't worth the risk to attempt to repair these types of breaks, especially considering how rare it is to have either just the inside or both the outside and inside damaged from a chip...

Re: Crack on inside of windshield
What is the bonding strenght of a quality repair compared with the surrounding glass? We test lots of repairs when we have trainees in, they do a repair and then we hit it with a hammer. Using Magnibond it is always without exception a new piece of glass that breaks, never the repair. Now going by this test which I am sure someone could make more scientific it should be possible to do a good quality repair, however I live by, if in doubt leave it out there is always and easier one around the corner.
