Car washes are probably great, as are mall parking lots, but the long-term key is to have 2000 or more loyal clients... it is likely that half of them will get chips each year, and you can do another 500/yr in new customers. Building a good personal relationship with clients is the key, send them a letter about 1 month after the repair asking how it is holding up & reminding them that you guarentee your work, X-mas cards... etc.
Consider the number of years you plan to fix windshields in your area (10 for me) the average number of chips per person per year in your region (about 1/yr for me)(LA would be less) and your average repair charge ($60 for me). This means that every driving human being in my community is worth $600 to me over the lifetime of my business. It is well worth investing some time and money into each of these folks. Even if it means spending 15 minutes cutting out a newspaper article of something I think would be of interest to them & sending it to them... this is worth it. My 15-minute investment will cement their loyalty to me (along with doing good work) and will be worth $600 in the long run!
A great book about this strategy is High Trust Selling by Todd Duncan.

10 repairs a day times 7 days = 70 per week company with 10 leased locations = 700 repairs per week how hard is that to figure out?
There are dozens of companies out there with multiple leased locations I met a guy last year at a truck stop in OK city said the company he works for has 40 guys in different locations
Someone who isnt a small independent comes on the board answers a question and rather than listen and learn you jump on them and accuse them of lying hmm wonder why more succesful businesses dont show up here?
