I will stick with ect. orbital sanding. I run a 800 colmen inverter off the battery when I need power... Pop the hood and hook-up, and keep the engine running...

Harrellbenjamin.

Im happy you brought this sander to light, Ive been looking at this particular sander for well over a year, It looks perfect except its pad measures 3 and 1/8" not 3", I would buy this tomorrow if you could convince me that 3" pads would work or you had some other idea for getting around the pad size problem.

Metabo makes good buffers with good warranties and the online price is right,
Ive tried to find this Metabo at local Metabo suppliers and we have many but they never seem to carry it, Id be happy to pay much more locally if I could feel and touch it sooner than buy online, I like to support my local economy whenever possible.

I would like to own this tool if you could get over that last hurdle, Im up for all and any suggestions, maybe Im making too much out of this 1/8".

I want to use it for sanding and polishing with 3M waffle pads.
Im not sure if it would make sense to buy 5" sanding pads and cut them down, and maybe a 3" waffle pad still might be OK, they are pretty thick.

Again Thankyou.

Once again your thinking to much.LOL.All you have to do is get a 3M or Norton "interface pad in 3" size.About 5-6.00dollars.I buy them off EBAY.Stick the velcro interface pad on the 3 1/8 sander pad and attach your paper directly to the interface pad for a sander pad that will give now on contours and now will accept 3" discs, paper etc.Online orders will get it faster then having your local true value or ace order it for you and much cheaper too!!Now order one tomorrow!!!

Here is what they look like.Just press it on the sanders pad (velcro hookit)and use whith all 3" discs, papers, scuff pads

The sanders are about 116.90 well worth it and the best for headlight work that I have seen yet.

Harrellbenjamin... You're a STAR... I must admit I feel like a dummy, that makes perfect sense to me.

I think I will order it online, as I said before we have a few stores in the area that are Metabo dealers, when ever I have enquired its like they don't seem that interested.

Thankyou.

Ben
I have the orbital that DVLUP sells and tryed their sanding discs, but they clog up to easy. I have been using wed discs that GT sells but it i to mesy.

What sanding discs have you found that works best for sanding?

I may even buy MABOTA sander thanking that is my not clog up as fast with the holes in the pads.
I did find the sander for about 115.00

Just go on EBAY and look for 3M Hookit 3" sanding disc's.I buy them in box of 50 I use 500 grit and then finish with 1200 grit. For the final deep gloss I will wet sand using a spray bottel with a sheet of 2000.I then use a 3" 3M polish pad with a little 3M finnesit 3000 compound and they look like new!!! I then clean with yellow-x (mix your own 2-parts westleys Bleachwhite with one part "Mean green"cleaner both avail at Walmart) rinse and I also have a bottel of rubbing alcohol I also use for a final wipe before sealing.

I watched the Dvelop demo LIVE and the pads clogged up at first too, I consider this NORMAL when sanding with coarse dry sandpaper and removing lots of material, I'm not 100% certain but I think that will happen no matter which sander or sandpaper you use but I could be wrong, I know some sanders and sanding pads have holes and that may help but I've never tried them.

The Guy brought up this issue, and said to tap sanding pad lightly to remove some of the residue and carry on... simple enough...
I hope that helps...

Harrelbenjamin... Nice post, Great Info.

Ben

On that Metabo SXE400 3 " sander, couldn't you just take the backing plate off and put it on a disc sander and take it down to 3"? I looked at the backing plate and it looks like it could be done that way and also use the foam pads for the contour of the lights.

Take a look: http://www.contractorstoolsupply.com/me ... -4017.html

That way there is no chance of acadently hitting a painted bumper if not thinking....... I would even think of taking it down a tad smaller than that.

Take a look at yours and let me know what you think...

Just a thought.
