excellent advice and I appreciate all the responses.

I sometimes use the customer's hood but seldom, there is a lot of weight in my tool box especially since I plumbed a power supply into it. So I built this stand from my dads old walker (since he uses only wings now). It was fun and cheap to make and has come in handy especially if I am working on motor homes and such. If anybody wants the recipe just ask.

I made a pouch type of affair from a bucket boss cut up and sewn together. Put two large suction cups on the top corners and attached two layers of thick anti-skid stuff on the back. I can attach the cups to a vertical WS and have all my tools in pockets where the wind can't blow stuff away. Nearly everything I need is then hanging from the WS on motor homes and trucks.

Laying on the hood, the anti skid stuff just won't slide hardly at all. I think the thing that causes scratches is the movement, and that's why I quit using a towel as it slid around a lot. On steeply sloped hood I can attach it to the WS and let part of it hang down over the hood. I can also reach it if I have to stand in the door of a pickup so I can reach a chip in the center of the glass. This saves a lot of time getting up and down to fetch tools.

To store it I just roll it up so the tools are inside and put it in my tool carry thing I bought at Home Depot. I keep a lot of extra things in it in case I need them.

I think maybe if you are going to use a towel or something maybe putting some anti-skid stuff down under it might work just fine too. The anti skid stuff is cheap and easy to cut so there's no reason you couldn't replace it if it got dirty. I've done it with mine.

Boy, I wish I was taller some times. I'm almost always using a step stool or something.

I certainly understand why the majority of you do not put your boxes on a customers vehicle. I however, also use a non skid bottom with an oversized towel on top. This prevents anything from slipping and is large enough to protect the side of vehicle while I perform the repair. I've never had a complaint and do many call backs from previous customers that need another repair. I use this method on cheap used vehicles to $65K Vettes.
I am thinking of purchasing a small folding table like Blind Squirrel mentioned earlier! Just in case!

Great thread. Thanks all. I use the protector just once in awhile, like when I'm up on a large truck and it's a big hassle to keep going up and down to get the needed equipment.
