Just wondering if this is a item that I should buy? Do you guys use them? eBay has them for $40 so its not an expensive purchase, but is it a worth while one?

jonnyques,
First one I bought costed around $140 and used it for taking tire temps when I raced cars. Worked great with setting up the car to handle. Still have it but can honestly say I never use it with repairs. You should simply be able to use your hand touching the shield to indicate how hot it is.
Nice toy to have if your curious to see how hot a shield can get on a sunny day. Might also help trying to figure out which cooling methods work the best for you. Other than that not sure it's a wise investment because after all the excitment is over it will propbably just sit in the bottom of you tool box
Just my opinion

I have one of those Radio Shack IR thermometers and use it for every repair.
While some can tell by touch if a windshield is too hot, I used to own restaurants and have spent so much time in kitchens, that I can pull hot plates/pans out of a broiler or oven without having to use a towel/oven mitt and have basically lost all sensitivity to heat in my hands.
