Need a crack repaired

Hi everyone, great site you have here! I have been reading some of the repair posts to gain a little knowledge of what is involved.

I have a windsheild crack (outter layer only), about 12 inches long. It makes a few bends and I'm afraid of it spreading further. My insurance does not cover glass in any special way, just the standard $250 deductable. The crack is not in the driver's line of site, so I was hoping to get it repaired and save a little money.

Will a resin repair stop the crack from spreading?

If done right, can the crack not be seen after it is repaired

TIA

Welcome xx,
In the case of a crack of that size insurance would frown on payment as the "don't recommend repair on cracks over 6 inches, bigger than a dollar bill", most insurance company's waive the deductible in favor of repair because their just very nice people. Just kidding they do it because theysave $ on the replacement having not been needed. You the customer has the right to insist on repair IF that is the right thing to do. You stated it was out of the driver's line of sight. That is one requirement. Did it originate from a chip? If not what is the cause of damage? I have seen cracks start as a result of improper replacement and this type of repair will ultimately fail. Another issue is contamination. Has the crack been there long? Over time damage in your shield will become contaminated and while a chip may remain repairable a crack is another animal and needs to be repaired ASAP for best results. If you provide your location (general) I'm sure someone on this forum would be glad to have a look and maybe you can get a repair done. Good luck, Scott

Hi Max, thanks for the reply. To answer your questions, the crack is about 2 weeks old. The car is garage kept, so I doubt too much corrosion is in there yet. It originated from a stone on the highway, so there is a small bullseye, and 1 crack that spread from there.

And finally, I live in Lebanon, Ohio, which is close to Cincinnati. If anyone knows of a good repair shop in the area, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

I'm a Columbus native!!:) Sounds to me like a potential repair. Seek out a shop thru your yellow pages. Ask a lot of questions and if the folks are knowledgable about crack repair they will be able to do the job for you. I have done some that other tech's claimed were unrepairable because of their size or they ran out to the edge, etc, etc, B.S. I have been able to monitor their stability and find if done properly they are as stable as the surrounding glass. When you ask the repair folks how they intend to terminate the crack if they don't intend to at least drill ( I would pop a bull at the end of the crack to terminate it) keep shoping around. If you appear to have done some homework your prospective repair person should explain what they intend to do and you'll know who to trust if you listen.
Good luck, Scott
