Well to begin, the manager at local McDonald's called telling me she had a broken w/s caused by Quick Lube guy putting on a new windshield wiper blade to pass inspection. The wiper arm (without the blade) dropped down on the w/s about an inch from bottom, three inches from center. I looked at it, tiny almost invisible point of impact, five legs running out from 2" to about 5".
Quick Lube to pay for repair....I go by Q/L to tell them the cost is $125.00...a friend is the mgr. and the one who did the damage, him paying out of his own pocket. He was about to call me when I walked in.
I go back to the car at McD's to repair, move car to shady area, go to work running razor blade across to determine whether surface or sub-surface, no indication of surface so long leg closest to me I drill and pop a perfect bulls eye, put injector (Delta Kit) on expecting the long leg to start filling.....wrong, no response. Flex, flex, move seal, flex, move seal, no resin in crack..bulls eye filled nicely......humm? I think at this time to leave it in place and allow for time to take it's course. Go to point of impact to clean out and fill.....no hole!!!
By now I'm getting a little smarts, check inside layer...what do you know!
The wiper arm had hit the glass with no damage to outer layer, all inner. Not advisable to repair inside damage and impossible to get to with equipment.
Had to tell my friend the McD. mgr. and my friend the Q/L mgr. non repairable damage... that hurt! No $125.0 for this ol' man, and who knows how much one friend will have to pay out of pocket, other friend let me know early on she didn't want to have to replace. No hard feelings on their parts as I thoroughly explained the situation logically. How do you find spell check on here Jeff?
Anyway, the lesson for me is to expect the unexpected! I have only had one other inner layer damage that was caused by a R.V. dealer installing a $1000.00 w/s and cracked an inside corner. Ouch!
