When I drive I look through about 90% of my windshield on any given trip, so I believe the "acute area" is a fairy tale devised by WS replacement techs to aquire more business. A properly done repair should be bairly noticable and not affect the drivers vision more than a dried drop of water of a fly that has met it's maker on the glass. That said if the customer is not satisfied with a repair it is your right not to charge the customer. I find it better to try and have failed than not to have tried at all. Also when you drive your focus should not be on the glass but on the road ahead(sometimes in the summer we get distractions on the sidewalk but that's another story). When looking through the glass at an object 200 feet away is your repair apparent, or is your glance more attracted by the lingere add on the billboard, I would guess the latter, and if it's the former than the repair may not be acceptable.
Enjoy

I repair chips in the acute area all the time (if its repairable) once repaired easilly go thru a safety. In ontario even if there is a small mark on thr w/s
mechanics know if the customer travels thru a swarm of bugs does this make
the w/s unsafe? When i'm repairing a customer w/s in the acute area and he is going thru insurance i mark the dammaged spot on the form outside of the acute area. Insurace companies dont want to see you repaired in the acute area

The reasoning behind not having a repair done in the acute area is that it is not going to be invisible and since this is so it would be distracting for the driver to see thru the windshield. Also some speak of the liability the the tech assumes if the car is involved in an accident, some have spoken of the possibility of a lawsuit however does anyone know of an instance where a W/S repair company has ever been sued for doing a repair in the acute area? I never have and which is more distracting the small portion of a properly repaired break or the glare from one that is not?

I repair in the acute area following the guidelines of our NWRA and the state of Maine inspection laws. Both guidelines are very close.

As a matter of fact, I would honestly say that at least 50 percent of my repairs are infact done in the acute area. That would be alot of business to turn down if I did not repair in the accute area.
I personally feel that "not" repairing the acute area is a joke. The acute area is where the customer is most concerened and is usually why they called me in the first place.
I agree with Repare-brise... I find it better to try and have failed than not to have tried at all.
I tell my customer that if the repair does not hold, that I suggest replacing the windshield - but repair should always be the first option.
Thats my two cents worth..

Like others here, I repair in the acute area also. However, I use common sense. The size of the damaged area and expected results based on previous repairs is the key. I'll repair a half-dollar size break outside the acute area but usually not within the acute area. Insurance companies also have size limits.

Yes insurance co's have size limits, but when and by whom were these limits set? They wer set about 20 years ago and they wrer determined with the help of glass co's( if we listen to them the acute area is everywhere the wipers go, 4 inches of the perimiter(stress area), ect ect. It's time for the insurance industry to get out of the glass industry and let the professionals do there job.
