Start up and Avg profit on Replacments?!?!!?

Post by Chris Williams (Trinsic) »

I own a small company of 30+ tech that go out and knock doors and just do rock chip repair. We would like to start our own wing of replacements.
Questions
1. What is the avg start up costs.
2. To have a fully loaded van that goes to the person house? (cost per van)
3. What is the avg profit per replacement (I know it's different for each one) (but the avg would be nice to know)
4. What is the avg insurance job profit?
5. What is the avg wholesale price for a windshield?

THANKS SO MUCH!!!
THIS IS GOLD!!

Chris - I found that it mainly depends on what part of the country you are in. Do you have a lot of autoglasss replacements shops in your area? In the Oklahoma market we only make $100-$125 per job , In south Wisconsin (before we closed down too cold to far to travel) we made between $145-$175. In texas we make between $145- $225.00 per job .

You will have to come up with a good marketing tool besides door to door ( for rcr its ok but on replacement not so good)

Thanks for the info... Why do you feel door to door will not work for getting additional biz. My techs can get a couple every day when they go after it.

Well in N. Texas most people dont answer the door for a salesman so it makes it hard. We tried this about two years ago and we stopped after about a month we only got two call backs and that was it.

I started in 2001 as a repair only mobile service and then worked into repalcements. My dad started his company in 1984,doing replacemnts and repair . In 2002 i bought my dad out at one time I had 5 locations , 3 in oklahoma 1 in texas and 1 in wisconsin. Now we just have 2 but working on reopening the others . We had a hard time finding honest employees. I found my self spending way to much time flying or driving to check up on a shop and then have to spend a week or two to fix problems. So I closed Wisconsin and 2 in Oklahoma and want to open the others n the Houston and Austin markets but who knows .

Sorry My Point is if you want to get into the replacement you will have to do more than market door to door.repalcement is a very competitive industry ( not like the repair) its harder to sell a repalcement .The insurance companies dont always pay or they short pay and then they dont pay for certain brands of glass. they aslo tend to steer the customers away from you.
But if you can take all the abuse it pays off in the long run.
Good Luck!

To enter into the glass replacement market and become successful you'll need some prior glass replacement experience.

If you have no experience....I'd suggest something else or work for a another glass company for 1-2 years prior to going at it independently.

New glass businesses failure rates are around 85%. If you feel lucky...go for it!
