small pit in windshield

I have a small nick or pit in my windshield that I wanted to get repaired. There are no cracks at all. I took it to Novus and Windshield Professionals in Renton, WA, and both of these places told me: "this type of damage could not be repaired, but that it does not effect the integrity of the windshield".

I've been surfing this forum and it appears that these pits can be repaired, but that there were many recommendations against DIY. I also noticed several postings stating some businesses do this for free. Can anyone suggest a business in the Renton, Washington, area that could do these repairs? Thanks

If the chips are indeed surface chips, meaning that the first layer isn't actually broken, then yes, there is nothing to be repaired and your windshield is ok. However, without seeing this in person, it is really hard to say if there is anything to repaired or not.

I would suggest taking your vehicle to another repair place and ask again.

As for the *free* bit, it is but it involves your insurance company. In most cases if you have comprehensive insurance, the insurance company will pay the cost to have it repaired for you.

Surface nicks can be reconditioned!

Techs that service large rental accounts are ask often to provide these repairs on turn-backs and are paid for them.

Do these little nicks pose any structural integrity problems to windshield if left alone? Not that I have ever experienced.

Insurance companies don't except billing for reconditioning this type of damage. However, if I'm working on billable insurance damage and see these, I will often provide these repairs to customer for no charge to either party. You cant make them look perfect but you can greatly improve visual cosmetics.

Think of it as a added customer service which many times will get you more referrals from one happy insured!

I do the same thing starqwest. Can usually let the sun cure them while I work on the real damage. Sounds like they are just describing these pits. I have on occasion seen pits that at first glance just look like a pit but there is actually a tiny like 1/16 or less inch crack below it. It was a dealer car so they weren't worried about me fixing it.
