I had a callback the other day - a 12 inch long crack that I fixed 2 weeks ago had started to spread.

Sure enough, the crack had started to extend about 1/2 inch beyond the drill hole (I didn't pop a mini-bullseye). So I drilled another hole and injected resin to stop it.

But that's not what bothers me. About 80 percent of the crack had become noticeably visible again - and the remaining 20 percent looked great - you could hardly see it. When I had repaired the crack 2 weeks ago, the whole thing looked great. But why now did the crack start to becoming visible again? I ran crack filler along the entire length of the repair to see if the crack had opened up - but it didn't. The crack would not absorb any resin. Even though the crack filler was intact, somehow air had managed to work its way back in, making it visible again. :eusa_wall

There aren't a lot of people out there offering crack repair. And now I'm starting to understand why. I'm really disappointed since about half of my work is crack repairs. How can I offer a service that I can't stand behind? Should I quit crack repair and just offer chip repairs?

did you use crack resin??..drilling hole at end of crack will not stop it...you need a bullseye at the end..also was crack old??..if it was contaminated the resin didn't bond to the glass..a lot more variables with cracks..i'm sure Coister can add to this..

What kind of system are you using for crack repair, what are your resin choices? BTW we do cracks as well, I probably pass on more than i should, if the crack is more than a month old, very dirty ect. I will pass.

Rescue, don't give up. Yesterday I had to refund money on a 16" crack that opened for the second time in almost 1 year. It opened after 6 months and I was able to repair it. Looked pretty good. Six months later it opened again. This time it would not take any resin. I even drilled and popped a mini in the middle of the crack thinking that the air was sub-surface. It didn't work either. Unlike your situation, my crack did not spread - it just opened up.

I believe the crack was only about a week old. It did not look contaminated.

I used Glass Technology crack resin.

Rescue, sounds repairable, I like GT' s Diamond clear resin line for chips however not for long cracks.

There is a huge market for long crack repair, as you said earlier almost no one does it! But you really need to research long crack resins and repair techniques.

If your crack repairs are failing you need to back off on doing these repairs for paying customers. Fall back, figure out what you are doing wrong and take steps to overcome the problem. If you crack is opening back up your repair is failing.

Do a search for long crack repair and you will find your answers on the forum. I have commented on this several times because this is exactly what used to happen to me also. Again I know Delta and other manufacturers will disagree with me on this so I won't comment anymore on it because it just upsets me that so many people are set in their ways and won't look at the obvious truth behind it. I know I know, everyone has all the lab tests to prove their resins are the best. LOL

How about doing only small crack repair. Say cracks up to only 4 to 6 inches.Best of luck.

also-- As this forum says over and over, make sure there is no moisture in the crack. Even just a little bit of water, especially if its in that perfect spot in the crack, will get trapped in. If it freezes, it expands--and that has high potential to open up the crack or push the crack further.
