Hi

Been doing quite a few crack repairs the past month. The other day i came across a Benz with cracks that didn't come to the top of the glass. I used my probe and couldn't feel anything across the windshield. How does one get access to the crack and repair it?

Thanks

If it was more than a couple of inches long, it may have been on the interior sheet of glass.

Normally when doing cracks, you will notice that coming towards the last inch or two towards the end of the crack, the cracks do not open up to the surface. What i normally do is fill the sub surface cracks and leave the last inch for filling through the mini bullseye at the end of the crack.

If you do not fill a subsurface crack at all, than i would recommend that you feel from the inside of the windshield cause it could just be a crack from within. Hope that this helps.

The method of repairing a crack would depend on the nature of the damage. Could you give us a little more information to help narrow things down?

i.e.
  • A short, thin crack: > 1"
  • A deep, sprawling crack: < 1"
  • Crack originating from a ding (star, combination type).
  • Approximate age / cleanliness of fracture.
  • Methods you used in your repair.
  • Results of your repair.
Including simple details like this will eliminate unecessary questioning and allow us to give you more relevant answers, faster.

High-quality questions yield high-quality answers. ;)

A sub surface crack requires a different type of repair.
Try to open up the crack to the surface for repair or
drill and pop at the end and do a sub surface repair.

I ran into a similar situation the other day. The Benz had two 3 inch subsruface cracks a couple inches apart that didn't connect with each other.
The owner said it happened from an impact on the inside of the glass. After making sure they were on the outer layer I just drilled and then they both filled very easily.
