I am very new to the repair business and have run into a problem with one of my first repairs. There is a large chip out of the glass and when I attempted to inject the resin it would not go in and just leaked out on the glass. The hole was too big for the injector. The only thing I could do was put in some pit resin to fill in the hole. Was this the right thing to do? Is there something else I can do to fix it better now?

Yes, fill and cure pit with pit resin first. Scrape off excess resin. Drill hole and fill as normal. If the pit is that large it may be more advisable to suggest replacement and good judgment/skill will come with time. If you want a quick referrence, check out NWRA website as a starting point.

If that does'nt work out, try fill and cure with pit resin. Do not scrap excess resin as yet. Drill a hole next to pit area and pop a mini bullseye and fill as normal, pit fill and scrap all excess resin. Hope that this may help.

How deep do you drill to pop the mini bullseye. Right to the laminate? No, that doesn't make sense because there would be no glass under the scribe to pop the mini. Is popping the mini designed to intersect the existing chip for injecting purposes? What makes this different from filling & drilling the impact point? Please explain further. TYVM!

Yes Marc, you are right. It is not advisabe or recommended for anyone windshield repair tech to drill right to the lamnate not only because of the reason that you have stated but also for damage that it can cause to the laminate.

Yes drilling was necessary, because the impact point here was too big.

I think the question was why not fill the impact point then drill back through the pit fill. This can work. However I have found it more effective to drill beside the original impact, pop, then fill. An impact of that size will usually have damage all the way to the PVB. This allows even pit fill resin to flow very deep and block resin flow after redrilling. Drilling beside the impact allows you to skirt around those blocked passages. After you have filled and cured, drill out the original pit. Fill with a drop or two of star resin, do not use a cure tab, and let it cure for a few minutes. Scrape off excess resin and pit fill as usual. This will give you a better looking pit.

The other option is using a large pit adapter over your injector.
