Hi I live in Newmarket, Suffolk in the UK

I'm very interested in setting myself up as a self employed windscreen repair Technician. I have being researching the idea which led me here. I do not come from an auto trade background but I am a trained Airframe Fitter, so have experiance in using hand tools.

I do have a lot of questions to ask about the business in the UK, so expect a lot of posts.

The first 4 question that I would like to ask,

(1)How much training is required to be competent in repairing windscreens?

(2)Is it a viable option working as an independent windscreen repair Technician, working from a car?

(3)How do you link up with the Insurance company's

(4) What kind of money would be needed to start up

1. Personaly I like to train guys over 2 or 3 days depending on how quick they take in information.

2. You can certainly make an extremely good living from a car, if you do the jobe well and most of all sell, sell, sell.

3. It is getting harder to tie in with the insurers although people that I train I will give advice and guidence on this matter, however there are many ways to make agood living in this trade without billing insurers, in fact most of my good customers do not have glass insurance.

4. Difficult one to answer this as it depends on how much it costs you to live whilst you set up your business and wait for the money to come in. The actual tools and training cost very little.

I will add one point to this, in my opinion 90% of windscreen repairs carried out in the UK are of a very poor quality, mainly due to very poor quality of training and equipment, it is easy to fall into this group, please do not be one of them.
