Hello all,

i have a 2000 740i that needs windshield replaced. insurance company has authorized safelite to do the replacement.
anything i should be concerned about wrt safelite or to watch out for during prep and installation?

I would state that you want an OE replacement glass i.e. an Original Equipment glass which will usually have the BMW brand mark on the glass. Some glass being used in the replacement market recently, whilst meeting safety criteria stadards, has been substandard in terms of shape, affecting overall finish of work.

I think it is also wise to ask questions. How long has the installer been replacing windshields, has he replaced 740i windshields in the past, is he NGA certified, is the shop AGRSS certified, will OE glass be used, what is the recommended drive away time that the urethane manufacturer specifies, what is the warranty against air and water leaks, what is the satisfaction guarantee, etc. Even if you don't know much about these things yourself, the shop will know you are going to be picky and hopefully will put their best installer on the job.

After the job is complete check the following:

Look all around the edge of the molding to make sure it lays down properly, and that you cannot see a dirt line indicating that the windshield was not installed in exactly the same position as the original. Make sure the vin number fits in the frit band cutout if so equipped, check the dash, the A-piller moldings, and the headliner near the glass on the inside of the vehicle, the cowling, the A-pilers, and the paint around the windshield for any damage from a sloppy cut out. There should be no urethane sticking out on either the inside of the outside of the vehicle. Also check the glass for any scratches, rub marks, stress cracks, etc. Let the glass shop know you will be checking for all these things and if they don't want the job you are in the wrong shop. If they still take the job they will probably take a bit more care with your car than they might with the average installation.

We need educated consumers to keep the quality standards at their highest.

One other point. If the windshield is not set to the proper height a wind noise will be heard. The air will get caught in the molding if all is not precise, German engineering.
There is a height adjustment tool available from ther dealer. Not everyone uses them. You are probably sensitive to the nuances of your vehicle. Take mr installer out for a ride and let him hear the silence. If you have a wind noise after the fact at least you will have some one who heard nothing!!
