advise wanted!

Post by Dean »

I've had 2 small bullseye repairs in the last week, my question is that both bullseys were similar in appearance but 1 had just a very slight nick that could be felt with your fingernail and the other I was not able to really feel any damage but in both they were full of air ( completely black ). the first one I did was the one that could not be felt! I did not drill this one but had no trouble getting all the air out! the second one I did pressure & vaccum cycles on for at least 20 mins. was able to get all but a hair line spec of air out, while flexing both sides and using just a little heat but to no avail was I able to get that spec of air out! Should I drill these kinds of damages allowing a larger area for to escape or just go a little slower and keep flexing?

No need to drill a bullseye, maybe make the impact point slightly larger with your scribe. If you can imagine the shape of a bullseye from a side on perspective you would realise drilling is certainly not required. Was it Dry? did you use a UV protector? Many poor repairs happen because insufficient UV protection was used, therefore setting or thickening the resin before it could do its job.

Thank you! I will try probing impact a little better next time. I cleaned with glass cleaner while covering with my finger, then used moister evaporator on about 20 or so seconds, then applied my UV Dome, then injector base, then loaded injector with resign, then pressure cycle for 5 mins, suction 30 secs, pressure again 3 mins, suction 30secs, pressure 3 mins all the while applying pressure to watch resign fill. I did 5cycles all together. Thank you for the advise.

If I do four or five pressure and vaccum cycles and cant get a good fill then I usually drill and it usually fills in.

Sometimes on bulls eyes it will help if you take a probe and insert it in the injector through the seal, watching in the mirror that you are in the very center of the chip that was made in the glass by the stone. Pressing gently downward will push the loose piece of glass captured there down into the laminate a little therefore letting the resin flow more freely around the top part of the chip, and hopefully letting any air escape to the surface. Pulsing the probe up and down a few times can be beneficial.

This doesn't work all the time, don't know why, but it's another trick you can use.

The top of the injector must be removed to do this.

Could it be that my tip needs changed? I've got about 10 or so repairs on this one, maybe its just to soft to pull that last bit of air out? leaking between tip & glass?

Delta Kits recommends that you change your seal (77-401) every 10 repairs.

Sooner if they are leaking or if you are having problems getting all the air out of a break. It's a very inexpensive part to replace and it will eliminate one possibility for the problem you are having. Hopefully it will solve your problem. Also be sure you are putting the seal into the injector writing first. If the seal is installed incorrectly you may have problems.
