I was using moisture evaporator on a star break this morning and I heard a "pop" and
saw a 4" crack running below the chip ! The air temp was approx 68 degrees and I
used it properly. Please advise

May I ask how long did have the moisture evaporator on the windshield.

If I need to heat the windshield prior to using moisture evaporator - what methods can be used ?

Wow, your scenario sounds almost identical to another member just a week or so ago.

I like using a hair dryer to warm the glass and keep it warm during the repair process. If the glass is cool I always warm it prior to using the moisture evaporator. If you can run the vehicle you can run the defrosters to warm the windshield and keep it warm, but if the weather is very cold it may not be enough. In Montana I used the defrosters and a hair dryer together quite a bit. In Oregon, at least at lower elevations the hair dryer is generally enough. Heat lamps and various other types of heaters also work but typically add more bulk, cost, and setup time.

Get some suction cups with hooks from the dollar store and some Velcro strips and you can easily position a hair dryer so that it keeps the damaged area warm during the entire windshield repair process. Remember though, warm is good, but too hot can cause a whole new set of problems.

I don't always have access to power since I do mobile service. Any advise for alternatives ?

What is it you need to power? If just the moisture evaporator or a light the mobile battery packs that we sell work great. For larger tools you may need a larger battery than we sell, a power inverter, or even a generator. Knowing how many AMPS your equipment draws is the key to finding the right power source.

I use the delta moisture evaporator too....I use it on most every repair..but...make sure you have your mirror mounted and watch closely....and like someone else here stated you need to ensure windshield is 80 degrees plus before you start or you will most likely get a runn...it is nerve wracking.......but the crack has to be dry!
