Windshield Repair Training

Hello everyone. Been a member for a couple of years, and was pretty active back then. I was planning on retiring and doing windshield repair. I was actually catching on to repairing a windshield ( through video's, books, this site), but decided not to retire because of the big crash in late 2007. Because I didnt retire, I lost my focus in windshield repair. BUT, its that time when I have to/need to retire, but because I'm an idiot, I've forgotten a lot of what I've learned. I really wanted to go to training somewhere, to have that "training confidence" I needed, but never did. I'll just cut to the chase. I want more than one day of training. I've talked to everyone at Delta about giving me an extra day of training, and they were more than happy to work with me on that, but I'm off all of December, and would love to find a place that offers 3 or more days of training. I have all Delta products, and will always use their stuff, but does anyone have a good school you can recommend that I can go to, for at least 3 days of training? I've heard over and over again, that all I need is one day of training. That may be ok with most people, but I definitely want at least 3. And I would like to go to a school that spends a whole day on setting up the business part (IRS, using computers, insurance billing etc). When I say I know nothing about business or running a business, I really mean I KNOW NOTHING. Not a little, NONE. I remember checking into schools a couple of years ago, and I did find some that said they would teach you no matter what brand I used. It was about teaching me how to repair windshields, and not about selling me supplies. As I said before, I use Delta, and always will. But paying for a flight to Oregon for only one day, is difficult to justify, and its difficult to justify, because I want at least 3 days. I havent been through this site in awhile, and I know there's a lot of new stuff, including a bunch of videos, so I apologize if I didnt look first. But since I'm off all of december, I need to get on it right now finding a training place. HEP me please (that's help me please but with desperation!)

Just curious. To which "schools" are you referring? What training or instruction were they offering and what were they charging for their services?
Cheers;

I apologize for not having an answer to your question. I do remember one school was in Lousianna, one was in Texas (austin I think), and the other was in Colorado (grand junction I think). When I was really into the windshield repair, which was a couple of years ago, I was actually not bad at all. I practiced my butt off in my garage, and did a bunch of repairs for people for free. It was the business part that I had no idea how to do. I have no business experience whatsoever. None. And have no clue at all how to start, or what to do. The thought of dealing with insurance companies, doesnt exactly excite me, but its mainly due to having no business experience. It would be nice if I could find someone around oklahoma city, who was in the business, and would let me follow them around for a few days, and show me how to do the insurance thing, but I asked a couple of people back then , and got a laugh. So pretty much what I'm wanting, is two days for windshield repair, and one day for learning the business side (paperwork, insurance, advertising etc...). I have the whole month of december off, and a zero balance credit card, so I have the time and money for some training. plus, I need a vacation!

I personally would be weary to allow someone else (Another Manufacture) to train me on using a tool and or product that they didn't design, or know anything about regardless if they told me they did! That personally doesn't sit well with me. I would really hate to hear an update from you in the near future telling us how big of a mistake you made making that type of choice.
I truly think your very best bet is to get in contact again with Delta and work with them on what you need to gain that wanted 3 days of training.
Also, keep in mind, here on the forum there are a large amount of successful businessmen which have years upon years of experiance not only in business but WSR too. Many of them have backgrounds of other business models besides WSR when that type of "Knowledge" base is represented the information you can receive in a given day I feel would be more than what you would receive sitting in a 1 day class! JMHO!
I know without a doubt the guys over at Delta can develop a "Training" plan to fit your needs and budget! Talk to Korey or even Brent!
Owning, Running, Operating, Managing a Business comes with it's own! It's no walk in the park, Yet very, very rewarding!
THe bottom line is this......Always , Always Under Promise & Over Deliver! Do the very best you can do, continue self training after initial training.
And don't give up!
What I am saying is in my own personal preference, by no means am I trying to make the decision for you, all I can do is give some Wise info!
Go with Delta! All the Way!

Thank you Chad for the response. I think you are correct. I will ask Delta if they can show me the business side of windshield repair as well as the repair.

I believe there are Delta users in your area, you may have to go a hundred miles or so but at some price someone will be interested in training you. Check with Delta on people in your area that they know are good people. (You generally wouldn't be competing with someone 100 miles away so they may be more willing to help you)
As far as business training, learn from a businessman, not a school. Most people in academia have never run a business and don't know how. If you can find an adult ed class taught by a local business person that might be an alternative. Dealing with insurance companies isn't that hard, but you will have to step out of your comfort zone in any case. Most times successful people have learned that they need to take a chance, yeah--butterflies in the stomach, to become what they wanted.
Remember you can learn a little at a time, just set a goal of learning a couple things from the forum archives every day and before you know it you will know quite a bit. You go the supermarket but don't buy everything there in one trip. You buy what you can use and then go back for more.
I think puka pau is right on. You are getting good information here. Just go do some searching the forum and a lot of your questions will be answered.
