I recently encountered a windshield that equipped with a “rain sensor” on an Acura MDX. The rain sensor “box” was housed next to the rear view mirror behind a black plastic cover. On the outside, it can be seen behind the tint on the upper portion of the windshield. From the outside, I could not see “anything” i.e. connections, wires because it was “too dark”. I also tried for 15 seconds (Unsuccessfully) to remove the cover from inside the vehicle. I called the local Acura Dealer and asked if the sensor is part/built into the windshield. The Parts Guy said “yes, it is part of the windshield”. Concerned about the liability, responsibility and accusation if the rain sensor “Fails” after the WS repair or 2 months down the road….I decided to “pass” on the repair.

I could have tried to test the rain sensor “before and after” the repair and also have the customer sign the invoice stating that I would not be responsible...etc…etc.....but I decided it was not worth the Hassle, because I am sure these windshield are not cheap.

Have anyone of you guys encountered Rain Sensors on windshields, did you do the repair and did it come back to "haunt you"?

I have repaired a lot of windshields with rain sensors, as long as the damage is not in the box area I can see no problem.

Yes, did I mention: the break was within the BOX area of the sensor.

I've repaired these before in the box area. Many work out OK and some have not. A rain sensor sends a infrared beam towards the windshield and collects data on angle of deflection to an optical sensor. If that signal is interrupted over 45 degrees (i.e. rain drops) it triggers the wipers. Really depends on the damage. A small bat wing or star repair might be OK to repair but larger combination breaks often do not.

All rain sensors can be removed, it's the rain sensor mounting plate that can't and needs to be replaced with a new rain sensor mounting kit upon new install.

If your attempting this type of repair make sure you discuss this with customer in full detail and have a signed agreement to proceed. If you fail too...yes it could become a future problem.
