I never fails.
A customer calls and says he has a 4 inch crack on his windshield.
I arrive at the job , and the crack is 14 inches.
Why do people do this?

First thing that comes to mind.... can't fix stupid.

If I did retail work, I would be in the habit of asking more questions to describe the damage. How big... can it be covered up with a dollar bill? credit card? penny? I've also wondered about having a customer text a pic with their phone if they are able to do that, especially if it sounds like it may not be repairable or if it's out of the way to get to it.

the guy probably thinks that you will not come out to repair a 14" crack. But, Once you are there...you have already committed the time and gas and you may be persuaded to do the repair. After all, the customer has nothing to lose!
