Nothing causes more turmoil and negative feelings than attempts to license or certfya previosly untouched industry lets explore what it really means without the fits and tirades that usualy come with this discussion.
Some states have started talking about licensing our buisness why?
I think its simple the more a trade grows and makes money the more the government sees it as another source of money plain and simple. I dont think anyone is fooled by the "We want to regulate the buisness so we can set standards" same line they have used in every attempt in every buisness. Why do we license dogs but not cats or horses? simple with dogs they had an excuse " well we have to regulate strays and need the money for that purpose" guess what the money goes into the general fund not the minut dog catcher fund. Licensing is a source of money plain and simple. Do you think those tolls on bridges really go to paying for the bridge? I lived in the Bay Area for most of my life its a documented fact the Golden Gate has been paid for for several decades and very little of the revenue goes to upkeep just another source of money. Our government likes money and every chance they get they will take as much as you let them.

Certification
Every orginization pedals certification as a reason for membership usualy as good as the paper that its writen on or the orginization that issued it.
In the car buisness mechanics can get certified but I have never worked at a dealership where it was a requirement for employment. In fact even the High line Audi and Lexus stores I have worked at the % of certified techs was probably less tha 10% every mfg requires training on thier vehicles but although they may call it certification its not the same thing.
So is the argument that they have no reason to come up with some certificate valid who knows . Every class i have ever taken in one trade or another has issued a certificate at the end again worth just about as much as the paper. i guess the only time to even worry about it would be if some dumb ass insurance company makes it a requirement that they certify you before you can work with them and thank goodness thats against the law in most states.
Am I concerned about Licensing or Certification NO! hell they still let you stop traffic on the hiway to let the cows cross here. Its still ok to carry a concealed loaded weapon anywhere but a court house here, Im on the bottom of the list. I guess my point is on both cases dont sweat the dumb stuff and even if the do start some lame certiying thing every case ive ever heard of existing buisnesses were grandfathered in. Again dont sweat it

I have to agree credibility is important and mfg training can never hurt our industry has several camps and beliefs as to what is the proper way to repair my belief is the proper way is the one that gives the best repair to the customer . A certicate from training is also a good sales tool as is the ability to put some orginizations logo on your card again membership brings credibility which in turn helps you sell the repair, not a bad thing. i think people get to wound up when they think the government is gonna tell them what to do. You should go to some of the Dairy Farmers group meeting around here WWF to the extreme

Here is my take on certification, it is usually not worth the paper it is printed on. When I had my electronics shop we did alot of warranty work for big names like Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, Bose, Marantz ect. We did onlone training with the various companys usually a half day per product and a week later yup, a diploma in the mail.

I took alot of big screen and plasma classes because I could not afford to lose the income of a tech or two just for a class.. I have over 50 diploma's and you dont want me working on YOUR TV. I am a excellent car audio tech, but know just enough to be dangerous with your 3000 $ tv. You could sleep through the class because there was never a test, that is my .02 worth on this topic.

Certification standards are sometimes just as worthless as committees and organizations who become self-generating and self-perpetuating for the purpose of fees and immortality.

GlassStarz said it all when he boiled it down to licensing dogs and not cats.

I just don't think licensing is going to work. Look at whenever the government sticks their hads into anything they mess it up.
