Exposing and ridding the local industry of shoddy techs and shops

Post by Rock-Pock-Doc »

I'm new to the wsr business - 4 months into it - but I am very good at it. That said, I'm frustrated by shoddy work being performed by some of my local competitors. This takes work away from the guys who are doing it correctly (including, of corse, me). I'd like to get anyone's input about how much of this you've run into. But most importantly, I'd like some advice on how to expose these "critters" for their shoddy work in a way that forces them out of the business.

Thanks very much!
By the way, Thanks to Delta Kits for this forum - it has been, and continues to be a GREAT resource for me......

It hasn't gotten there yet, but I can imagine where this thread goes...No naming competitors names in this thread. There's an inherent opinion that all ones competition does "shoddy work," so lets make sure that we keep this VERY generic.

Thanks

Simply said, IF they do shoddy work and IF you are as good as you think you are they should be of little or no consequence to you and your ability to make money in your venture. They will soon enough run themselves out of business. Be patient.

Thanks Jeff for reminding me to keep the names out of it, I appreciate you keeping me straight... Here is an example of what's going on - today I had a little combo chip to do on a vehicle purchased new in April of this year. The owner said she noticed the chip in her windshield the day after driving it off the dealer's lot, but didn't hear anything hitting the windshield on the way home. She told the dealer about it and he said she must have gotten it on the way home. Fast forward to my preparation today to repair the chip...On probing the break, there was not the usual glass crunch in the pit - it was sticky and it appeared the cone had been partially filled. It was easily apparent that someone had attempted to fix the this break but botched the job. These are he sort of things I am talking about. It isn't because they are my competitors, but it is because the one's I am talking about are doing shoddy work like this. Another I did a couple of weeks ago had 4 chips - the customer had just gotten a new break, but said the other 3 had been repaired. They looked untouched to me but the customer described in convincing detail, the "tech" putting the injector on each one of the chips to repair them. I agreed to try and fill at least one of them (we both agreed it wouldn't hurt to try). Well the first one filled up beautifully. So I continued with the other two which filled just as well. Anyway - these are the types of shoddy jobs I'm talking about.

Thanks for the input! - I agree that with time they will be nudged out by their dissatisfied customers. I guess I just had a tough week (runnig into 4 or 5 of these botched jobs just this week), and I lost sight of my short time in the business thus far.

The best remedy is patience. Give them enough rope and they will hang themselves.

R.P.D.,
I know exactly what you're experiencing. Many times I see a chip as I walk by a car and bring it to the owners attention (hoping to make a sale). They say it's already been fixed. My response is; 1) look surprised, 2) say "if it was properly repaired, I shouldn't be able to see it from 10' away," 3) ask if it was done locally (maybe they'll say who did it - repair tech, friend, himself, etc.). If I feel that I can make the repair look better and if the owner paid cash, I'll make a deal. If I'm able to make it look better to his satisfaction he'll file for insurance. I've gotten several jobs this way.

I never slam the competition but I will implant in the car owners mind that the work was sub-standard. Maybe he won't go back to the competitor in the future.

You should never run down the competition just push your own quality. Sales is a art its a weak person that has to bad talk others to make themselves look good its sales 101. Who cares if the guys around me are hacks? It only makes me look better.
Every sales seminar or book you buy will tell you this people dont like someone who talks others down and thus dont buy from them its human nature.
