Traveling with your kit
Traveling with your kit
Hi Everyone...
Next week, I will be traveling to Phoenix and I'm wondering if it is possible to take your kit on the plane with you without any problems. My fiance is a glass installer (well, actually a branch manager of a glass shop now) and he is training me next week on how to do chip repairs.
I have an older Glas Weld kit that I need to take with me. I've looked at the airlines (Southwest) rules on traveling with chemicals and some seem to be disallowed.
Since I'm completely new at this, and he has never had a need to travel with a chip repair kit, I'm wondering if it's a problem. I have to assume that it's got to be OK at some point, if you have people flying around taking training courses.
I leave on Sunday!
Fun fun, I also have to take 2-3 pistols with me, so that'll be fun declaring those and showing the world that they are indeed unloaded LOL.
Thanks much
Lana

Re: Traveling with your kit
Welcome to the forum Lana!
We've never had a problem with taking kits on planes. Make sure that you check them though, and also keep a copy of the MSDS sheets with the kit for when TSA inspects.
Also, make sure it's packaged pretty well, it's amazing how jostled they get!

Lana,
I just traveled from Texas to Las Vegas for a training class and didnt have any problems. I ran some masking tape around the kit to keep it from being knocked open during handeling. When I got ready to check the kit I was asked " whats in it" I replied " windshield tools" they said OK and that was that.
Hope this helps you.

Lana,
Just curious, why are you bringing 2-3 pistols?

Hey Dave...
They are my fiance's. They have been stored at my house, and when I go out to visit, he wants me to bring a couple with me. Plus they make it much easier to get WSR biz. LOL. JK JK!!
Code:
Did you put your toolbox in your suitcase? I'm limited to 3 bags, so I think I'm gonna put it in the super jumbotron bag. The only issue I have with that is the pistols (thus why I brought it up). I'll have to open the bag for the pistols, and I don't want to draw any extra attention to the tools if I have to.
Delta:
Thanks kindly! I was thinking of packing each of the bottles in a ziploc bag, just in case and then packing some foam sheets around everything to keep it from bouncing around.
I'm actually pretty excited about the possiblities! Every time I read here, I get anxious to get started. I dont wanna learn in the Phoenix heat tho bleeeeh. Plus in a hotel parking lot to boot LOL. He won't have his apt yet.

Chipchick,
No, I didnt pack it in anything. Just put the taped up kit on the counter and they put a tag on it then put it on the conveyer belt to the plane.
It was really simple , like I said, Just tell them its windshield tools.
In Vegas on my way back they did ask if there was anything flammable in there and I told them no. They were satisfied and loaded it up without another thought.

My wife works for an airline, and although it may seem that they load them up without a thought, sometimes they are inspected by TSA prior to actually making it on board. Unfortunately, it's inspected while you're not there, so if they don't know what it is, they can deny it boarding. So, again, carry MSDS sheets WITH the resins...Just to be safe.code3wsr wrote:They were satisfied and loaded it up without another thought.
Again, most times it probably won't be a problem..BUT, if you need it where you're going, it would really suck to have them deny it.

I don't know about your resins, but mine just say Windshield Resin on them with a company name. Nowhere on the bottles does it say Dangerous, Flammable, Irritant, ect. So even if it were opened and checked there shouldnt be any reason to deny putting it on the plane.
However, I do agree that to be extra safe and sure you should carry along the MSDS.

Where could I go to find the proper MSDS sheets? Be gentle here with me, I'm a complete novice (for now
