Looking for mentor

Post by Alan Nicol »

Hello,
I’m new to windshield repair and am looking for an experienced WSR person, living east of the Mississippi, who can serve as a mentor to me for a few days. Basically, I’d like to observe some typical days in the life of a repair tech with a variety of repairs (car, bus, truck, rv, etc.) done in various situations, various marketing approaches, working with insurance companies, etc.
I’ve taken the Delta training session in Oregon, have my own Delta repair kit, and have practiced enough to feel confident in my repair abilities. I live in Virginia and presently work full part time but have the flexibility to take any time off that I need for personal reasons. I’m very teachable and willing to pay a reasonable fee for your inconvenience. My objective is to become a WSR tech full time.
Anyone willing and able to do this? Thanks, Alan Nicol

I'm new to the game as well. I have also considered finding a mentor in my town, but why would a ws repairman train somebody to take away potential business? :eusa_thin I do not want to sign any noncompete agreements that might restrict my freedom to do business in the area.

I hope that the market will not be saturated with ws repairmen. I am trying to ascertain if there is sufficient market demand for another ws repair services in Portland.

Ricochet,

The nice thing about this forum, is there are windshield repair techs from around the world. You can find excellent information from a variety of sources here, without having to worry about the "backyard issue."

Hi Ricochet,
Yes, I totally understand a WSR tech not wanting to mentor someone in their own area, or to sign a non-compete. I was not even thinking of that. I am hoping to find a WSR mentor anywhere within 300-400 miles of my area which is in the western side of Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, but I don't expect anyone within 50 miles to respond.
I know this is done all the time in other industries, it's a pretty good way for a tech to make some side income without interfering with his own schedule. I know if I had the experience, I would be more than happy to help someone from another territory learn the business first-hand, and to pick up a few bucks at the same time.

I also am looking at WSR as a business. I am a former police officer retired on a disability. I want something, at least part time. But with my income and also having to pay child support, it is hard to even come up with the money for a kit, let alone traveling to Oregon or somewhere to train. A mentor within a few hundred miles would be a great solution for me as well. I do not plan to "invade" anyones territory except those who are already in the business here. I live in an area with about 100,000 population or more and there are only 4 WSR's in the yellow pages, and 3 of those are glass shops. Only one is a full time WSR.

Also with the money as tight as it is around here, I would like to "ride along" for a couple days or so, just to see if this really is what I would like to do before sinking what money I do have into a kit.

Anyone in Western Iowa, Eastern Nebraska, or Southeast South Dakota that might be willing to put up with me for a couple days?
Thanks
