Re: what if you crack out a windshield?
Thats a good question and everyone does it differently If its an insurance job I offer to pick up the deductible I dont have to but I do . For my dealer or fleet work I constantly use the words I will try to keep you from having to replace a windshield by fixxing the chip and have let them know several times across the year that one day maybe one will pop but it was gonna break if I didnt try so what the hey. With thes customers you dont have to do anything other than say im sorry I couldnt save it.
Everyone I ever broke I know why. leave the injector unattended while working on another, working on too hot glass, working on too cold glass or working with a new off brand injector that I hadnt practiced with enough to know why it was so cheap on ebay.
I guess each person will deal with a break differently but once you get good at the WR buisness they are so rare that buying someone a windshield isnt a big deal because you did $75,000 in buisness for every $200 windshield you had to buy

Re: what if you crack out a windshield?
You could have a disclaimer of some kind. Some ppl add this onto the invoice, while others would let the customer know beforehand that in the rare circumstance, it could break out into the crack. Either way, try to be prepared in any given circumstance if you can (check the temp, avoid doing two repairs at one time) to avoid such a scenario. Hope this helps.

Re: what if you crack out a windshield?
I always tell the customer up front that I'm not responsible for the glass
if it should break while i am fixing it two reasons; 1 its already broke
2 i charge the same price no matter what kind of car i'm working on
i also tell them the process doesn't break the glass if it did i wouldn't
be in business pppl are usually okay with that we dont't base our price
on the cost of a window if we did repairs would cost more if a bemer
window costs over 800 would you still charge 65 if you had to replace if you broke it / it is rare though maybe ounce a year

Re: what if you crack out a windshield?
If it cracks out the logical solution is to fix the crack, we regulairly fix long cracks, and a fresh one is easy to fix and has minimal visual impact. Replacing should always be a last resort, and if the chip was deemed repairable, the crack should be as well. If the customer refuses the repair, then every situation needs evaluation on an individual basis, but the best medicin is prevention.

Re: what if you crack out a windshield?
On retail jobs I always make sure the customer knows there is a slight chance one may crack. I say that the windshield is already broken, Im just trying to save it so it dosn't need to be replaced. When questioned I say that if it cracks out while under repair, it most likly would crack out when its cold. Most people are ok with it. I tell them if it does crack out, theres no charge for the attemped repair, but Im not replacing the windshield. I find on the dealer side that they know there is always a chance. When you have done lots of great work for a dealer, they know if one goes it was just the luck of the draw. Ive only had a couple go, and the situation was fine. Make sure the customer knows the risks, make them feel comfertable, and do a great job.
Re: what if you crack out a windshield?
If a customer's windshield cracks out, and you don't charge for the attempted repair, and the customer still seems to be giving you the impression that they are not happy at all, offer them a FREE windshield repair (or two). That way they are still getting some kind of value from your service, (not just a free busted windshield).

You didn't break anybody's windshield. If they called you to fix a chip, their w/s was broken and worth about $20.
As you gain experience, you'll know most times when your chip or your customer is going to be a problem. When faced with either one, pack your stuff and leave unless you're dragged back.
