What do you guys do when people begin to lowball?

Post by Wright Fix »

Hello,

I just wanted to ask how most people in this forum deal with people who lowball. I just received an ad that one of my fellow glass shops has started offering windshield repair for $6.95. I have a good customer base and some really good fleet accounts.

I will not get in a price war considering the price for windshield repair is already low in my area. I am a firm believer that I am worth what I charge and will not lower my price. However, what do you tell customers who ask about low price windshield repair. I refuse to speak negatively of other shops, but would like to tell my customers something profesional if they ask.

Thank you,
Heath

If a business is charging that price for a repair, you can be sure that the quality of repair will be subpar. Tell your customers that they will get what they pay for.

Basically all you can say is "you get what you pay for". If that shop did excellent repairs why would they only charge 6.95 for them?
I have had glass shops in my area offer free wsr to fleet accounts I shared with them, they all end up going back to paying for them.
Are they going to provide mobil service for that price? It's very doubtful, how could they afford to. The cost to shuttle cars back and forth to a shop can add up fast.

Sing along with me now!!!! "Candy coated popcorn penuts and a prize, thats what you get from cracker jacks" :eusa_danc
My best mentor one said " be fair with your priceing but never too low, be honest with your customer/competition, when the day is done be sure you have done "good works", and always leave something of value on the barganing table!!

While my friend and trainer/ mentor Ray has moved on, his words live.

Many replacement shops use the free or cheap repair as a way to get customers into the door. Think about it they get a customer to walk in who they know a large pecentage of can be switched to replacement. Just the way it works. I wouldnt pay them a bit of attention

My competition gives free repairs(they don't even bother with insurance, it is free, to retail , fleets, and dealers). As others have stated you get what you pay for, I prefer to pay for a steak than eat a free hot-dog, and apparently so do my customers. The dealers and fleets will quickly realize that instead of repairing 90% of windshields, they are now replacing 95%, which is cheaper 9 repairs at $40 and 1 replacement at $250(average), or 9 replacements at $250 and one free repair. The choice isn't hard to make once the customers are educated. Talk to the dealers about Wall-Mart doing $15 oil changes compaired to there $35 oil changes, I am sure they will give you all the arguments you need to convince them you have the better deal.

Enjoy
