How "huge" of a crater are we talking about? I would scuff with my drill then place a drop(or enough to fill up the crater) of star resin(premium bond) in the crater. Allow it to cure without a tab for about five minutes. Then proceed with pit fill resin as you normally would. This allows for the tight bonding of the star resin(no air bubbles) and the protection the pit fill gives against the elements. Just a note, these repairs are usually only temporary and will become more noticeable over time.
