Problem with Windshield Repair

Post by leggyone »

Can someone help me understand what when wrong?

I had an extremely small rock chip repaired on a very new automobile. The rock chip happened on a Sunday, and I had it repaired the following Wednesday, trying to save my windshield. The tech that came out told me that it was nothing, and took about 15 minutes to repair the chip. There was no running in the crack. It was windy and about 35 degrees outside. Once he completed, I asked if it would run, and he told me definitely no. This was one of the national companies that did this repair. Less than a week later I have this 12inch run in my windshield. I am a consumer and now must replace the entire windshield.

What did he do in the fifteen minutes?
Was that time arriving then leaving?
Was that total time setting up etc?
Was it a star on combination?
Did it have air in it before and after?
What did it actually look like after the "repair"?
Burrr!!! Windy and 35 degrees outside? I couldn't do it!!!
Do you know if he had any training, certified?

What was the name of the National Company.....? Were you given a Guarantee or was it a tailight guarantee....when you saw his tail-light drive off the guarantee went with them! These are the types of situations that give WS repair a bad rep.

By "national company" I assume you mean national "full service" auto glass company(Replacement and repair). All you did wrong was trust a company you felt you should be able to. Probably recommended by your insurance company(or someone you assumed was your insurance company). Your only option now is probably replacement. You should check out the replacement section of this forum for questions to ask before you have it replaced. There are some knowledgeable techs there who can help.

Be sure to call your insurance agent(not the glass number on the back of your insurance card) to report the failed repair.

Naming the company doesn't help answer his question. So, let's keep it out, thanks!

Sorry to hear of your situation with the failed repair. It is bad for all here too that folks send out poorly trained tech's and allow them to screw the public as well as mar the industry as a whole. I wonder if you could still repair? Is the crack in the acute area? Will the driver have the crack in their face while driving or is it out of the way? We repair cracks on a regular basis and at times I have returned to examine a repair only to find that it is difficult to find the repair. If you have wa well trained tech look at it you may find that it can still be repaired, provided that it is the correct way to proceed. I personally would do it for nothing if the vehicle is in my area just to set things right. As far as the company is concerned they should be told and I have no doubt who it is. They STEAL from us on a regular basis,
while that is a separate issue it is part of what this customer is seeking in the way of information. I am sure that they produce tech's that do good work also but their tactics are the true display of their integrity. Or should I say lack their of? So if your in this area please look in the phone book and I am the only listing under the WSR heading, in auto glass their are alot of shops so use the repair heading and I would be glad to be a part of making things right. Or mabey another tech will do the same, I just hope that this experience dosn't sour you on repair.

Good luck, Scott
My best mentor one said " be fair with your priceing but never too low, be honest with your customer/competition, when the day is done be sure you have done "good works", and always leave something of value on the barganing table!!

While my friend and trainer/ mentor Ray has moved on, his words live.

Alot of "national companies" that do glass specialize in replacements not repairs. They dont do the number of repairs a repair only would do they want to replace, they need the big bucks to survive (alot of overhead). Therfore they wont do a quality repair they want it to crack to make more money.
I've seen a few customers who were just at a glass shop where they were told that a perfectly repairable stone chip could not be fixed and they needed to replace thr glass.

Where exactly did the rock chip hit your windshield? After the tech was finished what did the repair look like? If there were any small cracks that were there initally did they get filled? In that kind of weather 15 minutes is usually not enough time to fill completely.

Hello All,

I will have to play devils advocate on this one.... There are just to many unknown variables that may or may not have happened in this case to make a call for an unfortunate customer at least from my side. I will say that we are all humans and even if everything was followed to a tee there is still room for error, maybe it was the resin? Who knows, righ? I am not saying it was but it might have been! There are good and bad technicians that work for good and bad companies alike. To base a decision on our opinions based on speculation might steer you wrong. I think your best recourse is to contact the company and work it out at that level and escalate it from there if you are not happy with the outcome. Hope this helps.
