Viewing Repair From The Inside

Post by tyler99 »

I have noticed when viewing a repair from the inside the vehicle damage is typically more visible.

I have never had a customer bring this up until today (the day after I repaired the chip). She was concerned the repair wasn't done correctly. From the outside the repair had tremendous improvement and looked really good.

Do you guys have a standard comment for this?

Thanks,

Tyler

One major reason is that from the outside of the vehicle, you are in the light looking into the dark vehicle. From the inside of the vehicle, you are in the dark looking out into the light background. Would love to hear more theories on this.

I make the customer sit in MY car and look at the old weathered repairs on my w'shield. The worse their chip is, the bigger deal I make of it. If they still want the repair, we go for it.
Also, a good habit is to take a good look at your finished repair from the inside of the customer's car. I'm always surprised at how much spilled resin and finger smudges I miss when I only look at the glass from the outside.

I have not had anyone complain of this, but I have noticed myself. One repair looked GREAT from the outside but when I was in the car I could see things in a different way(I could see much more markings). I totally agree with sydfloyd44 for the reason why.

Agreed with sydfloyd44, also repair = regained structural integrity first, improved appearance, while important to us repair folk's reputation, it is second. Another thing I recommend is to leave the injector on for a few after it has filled to your satisfaction. You will be surprised at the improved appearance. My theory is that the emulsified air is allowed to rise from the solution thereby making a clearer repair. Try it for yourself and see. Tyler your comment was "typicaly more visable". That I don't see? Mabey you could explain more?
Best of luck, Scott
My best mentor one said " be fair with your priceing but never too low, be honest with your customer/competition, when the day is done be sure you have done "good works", and always leave something of value on the barganing table!!

While my friend and trainer/ mentor Ray has moved on, his words live.

Thanks for the response guys.

I need to be more in the habit of consistently viewing it from the inside.

I am a new at repair and have gone through several training sessions with an experienced tech.

The handful of times I have looked from the inside. You can clearly see the damage from the inside more than the outisde after the repair. This is what I meant by typically more visable.

The person training (well respected person from this community) told me it is normal.

Before I begin a repair, I always let the customer know it is NOT going to disappear. I let them know my goal is to improve the appearance a minimum of 80% but the main goal is to keep it from spreading. I also take the time to educate the customer on how to tell if the repair is filled. In most cases, people will respect your knowledge and thoroughness. They will keep your biz card and will tell their friends, coworkers, and family.

If you havnt been monitoring the repair from inside and calling them done when they look good from the outside you havnt been doing your job. That mirror has a purpose our job is to make the repair look good to the driver not the squeege guy at the intersection. Dont want to be a jerk but half done repairs are a big problem

Actually, the way I was trained and I agree is to keep the car locked for security reasons.

My understanding is the repair damage will be visible from the inside regardless of the quality of the job.

Correct me if I am wrong. It seems a couple of people on this thread have also stated this.

Nothing personal, but I think sometimes the guys on here make this sound like brain surgery. Your post, Glassstarz, comes off that way.

The repair isnt done until you have removed as much as possible by viewing it from the inside some peer inside by looking through the side window which is a little better than not looking at all but if someone trained you with some lame security excuse for not looking through the repair from the inside then regardless of how long they may have been doin WR they are wrong and you were not trained properly plain and simple.
The primary reason for WR is to save the glass the secondary is to increase the customers visability. Most companys sell a inside attached mirror I just get inside and look if people dont trust me in thier car they can get it fixxed elsewhere.
Not to be repetitive but "A Repair is not complete until it has been inspected from the inside of the vehicle"
