Suzuki, there is no such thing as an ignorant question, just ignorant answers.... keep your questions comming.

Drilling is hard to describe but here goes. A WS is comprised of 3 pieces, the outer glass, a layer of PVB(a clear rubber like substance that keeps the 2 layers of glass together in case of an accident) and the inner glass. When drilling you do not want to drill to the PVB layer, but just before it(the outer layer of glass is about 3/32 or 2.5 mm of an inch thick). When using the drill to stop a crack, you drill about 1/8th of an inch, or 3 mm, past the end of the crack. Drill to a depth about 3/4 of the way into the first glass, then using a needle and tappet, place the needle in the hole you just drilled, and strike the needle with a light tap. This should form a mini bulls eye at the bottom of the hole. The purpose of this hole/bulls eye is to create a stress relief in the glass, and a spot that is filled with resin to stop the crack from expanding (the resin bond is stronger than the glass, this stops the crack). If you were to drill down to the PVB, it creates a few unwanted problems, first it creates a potential weak spot in the PVB, it creates a blemish that is unrepairable, and third you risk breaking your drill bit in the hole(the PVB grabs the drill). The mini bulls eye is easy to fill, and provides a larger surface area, plus it reaches down to the PVB. If you just drill a hole and dont create the mini bulls eye, the crack can pass between the hole and the PVB and continue. So please take your practice WS and drill some holes and try making sone mini bulls eyes, after a few you will get the hang of it.

For more information you can also do a search in the forum archives under the heading of drilling or mini bulls eye.

ok here's a not so funny ... funny as h@ll story. the first repair i ever attempted (yes ATTEMPTED) was 8 years ago. pretty much the company said heres the kit , drill a hole, fill it and leave. so i get to the car and find a rock chip, no problem im young, full of ambition and obviously know everything about everything (snicker). i drill the hole apply the bridge and start to fill. this was obviously a big void because ive refilled the injector twice. after 10 minutes and 3 injector fills i figured to heck with it let's call it a repair and be done (YES THAT WAS THE WAY I WAS FIRST TAUGHT THE BUSINESS SORRY TO SAY). well upon further inspection i found that all the resin was on the dashboard and running down the shield. if i had bothered to take off the black TERMINATOR sunglasses and paid less attention to the college ladies walking around the campus i would have realized sooner that drilling THROUGH the whole windshield was probably not such a hot idea. :eusa_shif
