Today went much better, I think we did a better job setting the injector, and getting the right amount of resin. I did several combo breaks that at first didn't want to fill the cracks, but after reading some of the post, applied a little heat to the inside of the shield and away went the cracks. Tomorrow at lunch, i will try without drilling. I was wondering if that may be part of our problem. I wanted to take some pics but the after pics you can't see very well. There wasn't enough of the damage left for the camera to focus on, so I guess that's a good thing. My wife is learning this too, she thinks it's fun.

Heat is ok, but don't let it fool you. When you use heat, the cracks will actually dissapear (temporarily). They swell up and tighten actually choking off the resin supply. Then as the glass cools, it contracts and draws resin in.

After using heat, don't asume that because you can't see the cracks that the job turned out great. Always allow the glass to cool back down before your final inspection and finish the repair.

Keep up the practice and enthusiasm. You'll do great!

Well, today at lunch I decided to practice making small bullseyes for repair purposes. And the first 2 or 3 went well, I drilled just a little, and then tapped the needle, worked fine. The 4th one looked great, so I decided to go ahead and practice filling it and seeing how they turned out.
I lined up the injector, put in some resin,, sucked it down and injected, and here comes the resin running down the shield. So,,,,,,,I grabbed my towel, and wiped it up, only it was still there, I thought, WTF!!?? Thats when I realized that the resin was running down the INSIDE of the shield. Guess I tapped a bit too HARD!! :)

Ok so if your drilling LAMINATED glass deep enough to pop a bull in the second layer your drilling to deep!!!!:eusa_shif If your not practicing on Laminate you need to get some for practice. Your local replacement shop will more than likely give you an old shield or better yet some flat lami scraps that they have laying around. (Less bulk) Remember that you don't have to drill deep per say, the size of the bull depends on the depth of your drill hole, deeper = smaller...... Practice,Practice,Practice!!!! Good luck:)
My best mentor one said " be fair with your priceing but never too low, be honest with your customer/competition, when the day is done be sure you have done "good works", and always leave something of value on the barganing table!!

While my friend and trainer/ mentor Ray has moved on, his words live.

Generally, the average depth of drill hole is somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 the length of the drill bit bur (length of cutting surface on the bit).

After you practice enough mini-bulls, you will get a "feel" for the depth of the hole based on how deep the needle goes into the hole.

If you tap (hit) the needle too hard when performing a mini bull on a combo or star, it is possible to cause a leg to run. Keep practicing these on several kinds of breaks to get a good idea of how hard to hit the needle.
